In 1989 two new models were introduced, or rather to new variations of older models.

In 1988 a new black model was introduced which was overall the same save for the inclusion of a rosewood fretboard and the introduction of the now standard vine inlay. The inlays were also originally pyramids that gradually depleted as they went higher up on the neck.

The original 777 models featured a basswood body with a maple neck and fretboard and had an Edge tremolo and DiMarzio PAF Pro pickups. The numbers produced of the yellow and pink guitars are unknown, but for what it’s worth the pink was produced from 1987 up to 1987 and the yellow from 87 all the way up to 1996. The 777LNG was the first produced of all 777 Jems and only 777 exist each of which was numbered and signed by Steve Vai himself. Three different models were produced each labeled as the JEM777DY, JEM777SK, and JEM777LNG, with the color being the only real difference between them, each colored Desert Sun Yellow, Shocking Pink, and Loch Ness Green respectively. The Ibanez JEM777 is the oldest Jem model having been developed back in 1985 and released in 1987 by the merged powers of Steve Vai and Ibanez whilst he was shopping around for a company fitting enough to bring the vision of the Jem into reality. JEM777VBK - vine inlay, Black, American Basswood body (years of production 1988 - 1992).All Jem777LNGs have been signed and numbered by Steve Vai with a differing squiggle/graphic underneath making each guitar very unique. From a technical point of view, all JEM777 guitars have more or less the same specifications with the other two JEM models (JEM7 and JEM77). The Loch Ness Green guitars were also hand signed by Steve Vai. One of the most noted users of these was the late Denis D'Amour of Canadian band Voivod. There are exactly 777 JEM777LNG (which stands for "Loch Ness Green") guitars around the world, which is also the first variant produced. A green multi-tool mirroring the JEM777’s image colour, a certificate of authenticity, and a strap are included. The JEM777 variants are the oldest variants among all JEM models. Currently no 777 model is in production. A 30th anniversary plate is attached inside of the hard-shell case. The JEM777 also uses DiMarzio® Evolution® humbuckers in its bridge and neck positions, and a DiMarzio® Evolution® single coil in its middle position for a wide array of rock tones.

The DiMarzio® Evolution® pickups are the main factors in giving the JEM series its unique sound. The Edge tremolo, with an Ultralite Tremolo Arm™ and Lion’s Claw cavity, ensures stable tuning and radical tremelo effects. The maple fretboard has a Scalloped Fingerboard on 21–24 frets, and the Disappearing Pyramid inlay is colored in green, yellow, and pink. The neck joint is traditional, but the Tilt-Neck Joint offers easy upper fret access. The slim JEM 5-piece maple/walnut neck is jointed with a metal plate including the 30th anniversary logo. As featured in the original JEM777, the body is solid basswood with a fat but well-balanced tonality, including the JEM’s symbolic feature: the “Monkey Grip” handle.

Ibanez proudly revives the classic JEM777 with updated specs and celebrates its anniversary. The year 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of JEM series. The JEM777 was available in three different colours over several periods: Loch Ness Green (LNG) (1987), Desert Sun Yellow (DY) (1987–1996), and Shocking Pink (SK) (1987–1989). Ibanez is very pleased to celebrate this 30-year milestone in the ever-evolving and fruitful collaboration with Steve Vai. 30 years later, the JEM has become an iconic image in the world of guitar and, for over a decade, its sister model, the RG, is second in worldwide sales only to the Fender Stratocaster. Ibanez was finally viewed as an important innovator and there would be no looking back. The JEM, with its cutting edge floating tremolo and monkey grip, took off like a rocket. The 1987 Chicago NAMM Show marked the introduction of the Steve Vai-designed JEM guitars and constituted a major turning point in the fortunes of Ibanez and the development of the electric guitar. The legend is back! The Ibanez JEM777 is the first JEM series of Steve Vai’s signature model. Ibanez Steve Vai Signature JEM777 30th Anniversary Overview by GAK:
